Mental Health Awareness Walk to be May 19

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) Saratoga County will be having its 2nd Annual Mental Health Awareness Walk on May 19 at the Saratoga Spa State Park.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the walk will start at 11 a.m. The cost of the walk will be $20 and when people register they will receive a free t-shirt.

According to DBSA Saratoga County, funds from the walk will go towards affordable training opportunities, informational pamphlets, walk expenses, increased public awareness, advocacy for mental health and special speakers for groups. North Country Ministry awarded $2K grant

North Country Ministry awarded $2K grant

National Grid has awarded a $2,000 grant to North Country Ministry which is an outreach organization that serves families in need in rural Warren County.

According to a statement by North Country Ministry, National Grid has helped North Country Ministry in the past by meeting emergency needs of families in distress.

"The work that North Country Ministry is doing to provide counseling and assistance in the rural communities of Warren County is much appreciated," said William Flaherty, National Grid Director of Customer and Community Management. "National Grid is pleased to continue our support of those efforts with this donation to the Emergency Assistance Fund."

North Country Ministry sees more local families using their services for emergency needs, visiting the clothing center and making use of the gathering place lunch programs.

March of Dimes returns to Capital Region

On Sunday, April 29 hundreds of families and business leaders will join together in the March of Dimes' March for Babies at High Rock Park in Saratoga Springs.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. The three mile walk begins at 10 a.m.

The March of Dimes is the leading non-profit organization for pregnancy and baby health.

Capital Region residents now have the opportunity to show their support for the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York on the Facebook page.

The Food Bank has made two cover photos for supporters to choose from. Just save the image to a computer and upload it to Facebook.

ValleyCats to hold National Anthem auditions

TROY - The Tri-City ValleyCats will be holding their 2nd Annual National Anthem tryouts on Saturday, May 19. Anyone interested in auditioning is welcome to attend.

The auditions will be held on the Lower Level of Crossgates Mall near the Apple Store from 9-1p. Registration begins at 9a, auditions will be held on a first come first go basis. 

Singers may perform individually or as a group, instruments will be allowed as long as they do not require electricity. 

The panel will select five finalists and those finalists will be voted on on the ValleyCats website.

Mohawk Hudson Humane Society's 125th Anniversary Gala to be April 21

The 125th Anniversary  Around the World for 80 Strays Gala will take place on Saturday, April 21 at the Hilton Garden Inn on Hoosick Street in Troy.

The event will benefit the Hudson Mohawk Humane Society and will feature live and silent auctions. Music will be provided by Grand Central Station.

According to a statement, the society will present 2012 Human Heroes Awards and Goldstein Auto Group will receive the Humane Business Award,  while the Humane Non-Profit Award will be presented to Community Resource Federal Credit Union. 

More awards will be given to Cohoes Harmony Hill School third grade students & teachers when they receive the 2012 Humane Education Award and John Norton will be given the Humane Advocate Award for his photographs of homeless animals. 

The Society will also present its highest award given in honor of Dr. William O. Stillman, who founded the organization in 1887.
